Dermatology - understanding our practice and what we do.

Cutting Edge Dermatology was established by Dr. Autumn Starnes and her husband Dr. Christopher Starnes in 2011.  We have been providing Medical and Surgical Dermatologic services to the region ever since.  We strive to deliver the care you need at the time you need it.

Dermatology is a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of conditions affecting the skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes. It encompasses a wide range of disorders, both benign and malignant, that can manifest in these areas of the body.

Dermatologists, the medical professionals who specialize in dermatology, are trained to recognize and manage various dermatological conditions, including but not limited to:

  1. Skin Infections: Dermatologists diagnose and treat various infections of the skin, such as bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic infections. This may include conditions like cellulitis, herpes, ringworm, and scabies.

  2. Dermatitis and Allergies: Dermatologists address allergic reactions and dermatitis, including contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis (eczema), and allergic skin rashes. They help identify triggers, provide relief, and develop management plans.

  3. Acne: Dermatology encompasses the evaluation and management of acne, a common skin condition that can occur at any age. Dermatologists provide personalized treatment plans to control acne and prevent scarring.

  4. Skin Cancer: Dermatologists play a crucial role in detecting and treating skin cancer, including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. They perform skin examinations, biopsies, and surgical procedures for the removal of cancerous lesions.

  5. Psoriasis: Dermatology addresses chronic skin conditions like psoriasis, characterized by inflamed, scaly patches on the skin. Dermatologists offer treatment options to reduce symptoms, relieve discomfort, and improve quality of life.

  6. Hair and Nail Disorders: Dermatologists evaluate and manage conditions affecting the hair and nails, including hair loss (alopecia), fungal nail infections, brittle nails, and other disorders that impact their growth, appearance, and health.

  7. Cosmetic Dermatology: Dermatologists may also specialize in cosmetic procedures aimed at enhancing the appearance of the skin, such as Botox injections, dermal fillers, chemical peels, laser treatments, and other non-surgical rejuvenation techniques.

Dermatologists utilize various diagnostic techniques, such as visual examination, skin biopsies, allergy testing, and advanced imaging technologies. They develop individualized treatment plans that may involve medications, topical creams, lifestyle modifications, surgical interventions, or other therapeutic modalities.

Overall, dermatology encompasses the comprehensive care of skin-related conditions, aiming to promote skin health, provide relief from discomfort and symptoms, prevent diseases, and maintain the overall well-being of patients.
